Surveillance / Informatics: Content Vetting Workgroup

In Fall 2015, the CSTE Surveillance and Informatics Steering Committee and the RCKMS Co-chairs identified a need for a workgroup to vet knowledge artifacts created as part of projects associated with electronic case reporting (eCR). The Content Vetting Workgroup was convened as a short-term workgroup to collect input from the public health community.

Workgroup Goal:
Vet the knowledge artifacts developed as part of electronic case reporting activities by CSTE and other PH organizations. These artifacts include:
  • RCKMS Default Content: Reporting specifications that come pre-populated in the RCKMS Authoring interface and serve as the basis for jurisdictional localizations. Includes reporting criteria, reporting logic, and value sets, for all notifiable conditions [Developed by the RCKMS Content Development Team]
  • Reportable Conditions Trigger Codes (RCTC): Trigger codes that are implemented within an EHR to initiate a call from an EHR system to a decision support service [Developed by the RCKMS Content Development Team, in conjunction with value set work]
Workgroup Objectives:
  • Provide feedback on proposed RCKMS default content and ensure that the reporting specifications meet the needs of public health
  • Provide feedback on proposed codes in the RCKMS value sets and RCTC, and confirm that the proposed codes will correctly identify potential cases for conditions mandated to be reported to public health
  • Identify opportunities for harmonization of reporting specifications and instances where variation in jurisdictions reporting requirements exist
Content Vetting WG 2015 – 2016:
From Fall 2015 – Fall 2016, the Content Vetting Workgroup met 31 times over the course of the year, with subject matter experts from STLT PHAs and CDC. The workgroup reviewed and provided feedback on proposed criteria for 74 notifiable conditions. Updated versions of the reporting criteria are available upon request to RCKMS@cste.org.
Content Vetting WG 2016 – 2017

For Fall 2016 – 2017, the major activities of the Content Vetting Workgroup are to review and vet the RCKMS value sets and RCTC. To support better this activity, the WG switched from weekly workgroup discussions to the use of feedback surveys to get PH feedback. Feedback surveys are distributed through CSTE SI and ID mailing lists, and will be posted on this webpage.

The latest version of the RCTC is available on PHINVADS. RCKMS value sets are hosted on VSAC, with lists of included codes are available upon request to RCKMS@cste.org.
